SIGMA Introduces Lenses for Canon RF Mount: What You Need to Know

After years of waiting, SIGMA is finally releasing a selection of lenses for Canon RF Mount cameras. The Canon RF Mount was introduced in 2018, and since then, the range of EOS R cameras has become increasingly popular as DSLRs began to wane and mirrorless cameras became the new industry standard.

The Big News!

As of April 23, 2024, SIGMA is developing 6 APS-C format lenses under a license agreement with Canon, Inc. These lenses are:

The 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary will be available in July 2024, with the remaining models releasing at later dates, starting in Fall 2024.

The Features

SIGMA lenses for Canon RF Mount will offer exceptional compatibility with Canon EOS R cameras, although they are designed primarily for Canon’s popular crop-sensor camera bodies, such as the EOS R7, R10, R50 and R100 (available models as of April 2023).

Features of the SIGMA lenses for Canon RF Mount include:

Exclusive new design for mirrorless systems

Exclusive design with performance and functions that meet the expectations for mirrorless systems by leveraging the short flange back.

Autofocus tuned for each lens

Thanks to an autofocus drive control program tuned for each lens and high-speed data transmission, the lenses will offer high-speed autofocus.

Compatible with in-camera image stabilization

The lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization. The camera senses the focal length of the lens and automatically optimizes image stabilization performance.

Aberration correction supported

The lenses will be fully compatible* with in-camera aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations and distortion. By matching corrections to the optical characteristics of the lens, this function takes image quality to an even higher level.

* Only when the camera is compatible.

Mount with dust and splash resistant structure

The lens mount incorporates rubber sealing to protect the mount from dust and water drops.

FAQ

We’ve already received plenty of questions about the launch of SIGMA lenses for Canon RF Mount. While we can’t address all of them, here are some of the common questions that we are able to answer.

Waiting for 150-600 RF mount, when or will you ever bring one out?

  2. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

Right now, we are only introducing the 6 lenses mentioned in the article. SIGMA has not decided on a course of action beyond these lenses.

  3. Steve says:

I was excited to read and have been awaiting your launch of lenses for RF mount bodies. Whilst it’s brilliant to see the launch of these lenses, the fact that they’re specifically designed for crop sensor systems makes me a bit unsure of moving lenses. I currently use canon eos lenses with the R adapter on my R5. These work well with no limitations. Some of the lenses I would like to see in your developments are 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200. I look forward to watching your future releases.

  4. Tom Bognar says:

Will Sigma produce a Canon RF compatible zoom lens in the range of 150 or 180 – 600mm in Full frame format with Image Stabilization of 5.5 stops of shake-correction? Also with a F stop between f/5.6-6.3 in the future?

  5. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

Hi Steve, thanks for the feedback. Hopefully we will see such lenses down the road, but in the meantime if you need to fill out your kit, we do have an extensive selection of Canon EF mount lenses that work great with the OEM adapter.

  6. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

We don’t have any information on future development for RF beyond the six lenses announced, but here’s hoping there is more to come!

  7. Karen says:

Do these lenses have image stabilization in the lens?

  8. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

At the moment, no lenses in this range have OS built into the lens. Lens-based OS is mainly used in long telephoto lenses.

  9. Daniel Perez says:

Will Sigma ever introduce a 70-200mm RF-compatible lens in the near future?

  10. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

We don’t currently have any information on additional lens development for RF mount, but we do hope to have more options in the future.

  11. gilles says:

this is excellent news however there are no birding lenses announced; and there are a couple of caveats to boot : with third partiy lenses you cannot use extenders and there is nothing to compete, weightwise , with canon 800mm rf for those of us that aren’t into weight lifting. The only viable is 500mm f5.6 but without converter on rf …

  12. Steve says:

I been using the 16mm, 30mm and 56mm DC DN trio for Canon EF-M mount since June 2020 on an M50 & M50 Mark II. Will these 3 existing lenses be able to be converted to the Canon RF mount for a service fee? This will help me decide whether to purchase another set of the DC DN trio or convert for RF mount only. Thanks for any feedback.

  13. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

Yes, we do expect that SIGMA’s Mount Conversion Service will be available for these lenses after the RF versions of these lenses are released later in 2024. Please feel free to check with our service department at info@sigmaphoto.com to confirm when the time comes. Thank you!

  14. Volnei Woods says:

Will these lenses be compatible with the Canon R6 Mark 2?

  15. Avatar photo Nick Vrona says:

Yes, they will be compatible, but please note that because they are designed for APS-C there will be a crop applied when using with a full-frame camera.

  16. V Collis says:

Please bring out your Art range for Canon full frame RF mount cameras! I currently have your your Art 24-105mm lens and I’m using it with an adaptor on the R5. I love this lens and would really appreciate an RF mount version

  17. Avatar photo SIGMA America says:

We don’t know of any plans for additional RF Mount lenses right now, but we will do our best to bring our lenses to as many users as possible!

  18. Lisa says:

Hi another vote for any Sigma RF mount lens for a full frame sensor. I am currently using EF mounts with an adaptor on my R5-but I would really just love to not need the adaptor.

  19. Ian says:

I see that the “Distortion Correction” setting is greyed out. Does this mean that the lens is unable to provide in-camera distortion correction for JPEG photos?

  20. Avatar photo SIGMA America says:

That is correct. The lens does not support the Digital Lens Optimizer function at this time, but distortion can be corrected manually or with built-in lens profiles in post-processing.

  21. Nadir says:

Will the manual focus ring work as a control ring similarly to how the Canon rf lenses have control rings? i.e. will the manual focus ring be able to adjust ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed?

  22. Avatar photo SIGMA America says:

Yes, this can be configured from the menu on camera bodies that support this function.

  23. I have the 18-50 and really love it on my R7. I don’t know if folks realize just how compact that lens and camera are together, and the images are fantastic. Any idea when the prime lenses will be available?

  24. Avatar photo SIGMA America says:

Thank you! RF Mount, APS-C format primes are still in development, but we will have more information soon. Please keep an eye on our socials for news when it becomes available.

  25. Lisa Toll says:

Hi SIgma. I love your lenses on my R5..anxiously awaiting news of full frame RF mounts for my lens collection.
