First Look: SIGMA 15mm F1.4 DG DN DIAGONAL FISHEYE Art Lens

Fisheye lenses are often viewed as a novelty. While some decent fisheyes have emerged over the years, the immense, 180-degree angle of view offered by these types of lenses often leads to poor image quality, whether from manufacturing challenges or simply because they aren’t really meant to knock anyone’s socks off. They get dusted off once in a great while, take a few wacky shots of the dog, then get dropped back on the shelf to be forgotten once again.

But the new SIGMA 15mm F1.4 DG DN DIAGONAL FISHEYE | Art is different… much different.

This lens takes the offbeat angle of view very seriously, and elevates the art of fisheye photography to a whole new level. Now, experiments are keepers. Throwaways become client quality. Wacky dog shots are… well, still wacky dog shots, but they look a heck of a lot better!

Whether you’re a filmmaker, astrophotographer, editorial photographer, or world traveler, this new lens is ready to elevate your fisheye fun to professional-level quality.

Key Features of the 15mm F1.4 DG DN DIAGONAL FISHEYE | Art

The 15mm F1.4 DG DN DIAGONAL FISHEYE | Art is brimming with features, all of which are designed to provide the highest performance and the best user experience.

High resolution across the entire image, even at F1.4

Unlike most fisheye lenses, the SIGMA 15mm F1.4 utilizes the latest optical design that effectively corrects sagittal coma flare and other aberrations. This lens can precisely reproduce bright points of light across the whole frame even wide open, making it ideal for astrophotography.

180° angle of view that covers the entire frame

The main appeal of fisheye lenses is, of course, the extreme 180-degree angle of view and powerful distortion effect. The lens achieves this unique look while maintaining strict performance standards. As a diagonal fisheye, it also covers the entire image sensor, unlike a circular fisheye lens that produces a round image.

Minimized flare and ghosting

Wide-angle lenses often exhibit a lot of undesirable flare or ghosting when shooting in the direction of light sources. The SIGMA 15mm F1.4 offers unbeatable backlight resistance for clear and sharp images under any lighting conditions.

Astrophotographer-friendly features

Much like the SIGMA 14mm F1.4 DG DN | Art, this lens is packed with features that astro shooters appreciate. A manual focus lock, lens heater retainer, rear filter holder, special locking lens cap, and a durable Arca-Swiss tripod socket all make this lens perfect for a night under the stars.

HLA linear focusing motor

Fisheye SIGMA’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) yields fast and ultra-precise autofocus performance, which is a must when it comes to capturing fast action like skateboarding or parkour, and ideal for filmmaking, especially when tracking a subject.

Extremely durable construction

Premium build quality is true of any SIGMA lens, and the 15mm F1.4 is absolutely designed to perform in even the harshest conditions. Dust and splash resistance, water and oil-repellent front coating, and thermally stable composite parts all contribute to a seriously reliable piece of equipment.

Additional Features:

  • 21 elements in 15 groups
  • Aperture ring with click and lock switches
  • Customizable AFL button
  • 11-blade rounded diaphragm
  • High-precision, durable brass bayonet mount
  • “Made in Japan” craftsmanship

The detail reproduction on a full-frame camera is absolutely outstanding. All of the in-focus elements are crisp and clear, while the falloff a bigger apertures is smooth and feels very natural. Even the frame edges are gorgeous, saving me a lot of time in the editing room.
