When SIGMA first introduced the Art line of prime lenses in 2013, there was no question about which focal length would arrive first. While 50’s are classic and 85’s are perfect for portraits, there’s only one lens that could push the entire company to a new level — the 35mm Art would be that lens.
Of course, technology continues to move forward, and mirrorless camera bodies have now begun to take over the camera industry. Thus, a new 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art — designed exclusively for mirrorless — has been developed to bring the incredible image quality and versatility that DSLR shooters have enjoyed for years to E-mount and L-mount systems.

Astrophotographer Jack Fusco was among the first people to try the 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art outside the confines of the SIGMA factory, and he immediately put it to good use, taking advantage of the lens’ fast maximum aperture and ability to produce sharp imagery across the entire frame. With this lens, he was able to produce spectacular nighttime photographs like the two shots above… both illuminated entirely by the moon, by the way!
“A fast aperture is a crucial part of picking up faint detail in the sky. The quality of this lens when shooting wide open, filling the corner of your frame with bright stars, is extremely impressive. Having a lens that performs this well whether I’m taking single frames, tracked exposures, or shooting time-lapse, starts me off at a huge advantage.”– Jack Fusco
Updated for the Latest Mirrorless Camera Systems
Compared to conventional models, the new 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art offers improved optical performance, with minimal aberrations and exceptional sharpness from edge to edge, even at F1.4. A streamlined focusing system, featuring a stepping-type motor and a single focusing element, provide quick, smooth, accurate autofocus response while reducing the overall size and weight of the lens.
The 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art also offers a variety of convenient, practical features for demanding users. On-lens controls include a focus mode switch, AFL button, aperture ring, aperture ring click switch, and an aperture ring lock. Most notable, however, is probably its slimmed-down overall design, which brings the uncompromising image quality of the 35mm Art to smaller camera systems, a real benefit for photographers on the go.
“Escaping light pollution to capture the night sky often means traveling to remote locations. This makes the decision of what gear to bring even more critical. Pair the lightweight with its fast aperture and incredible corner sharpness and this lens will easily earn a spot for the most demanding astrophotography shoots.”– Jack Fusco
Built for Professional Use No Matter Where You Shoot
Like other SIGMA Art lenses, the entire lens body of the 35mm F1.4 DG DN | Art incorporates a dust and splash-proof structure for peace of mind in inclement conditions, not to mention a water and oil-repellent front coating. For outdoor photographers like Jack, these are extremely valuable features, especially when perfect photo opportunities are few and quite literally far between.
“Having gear that I can rely on in all conditions in extremely important. The build quality of this lens doesn’t make any sacrifices while still being delivered in a compact and lightweight package. Pair this with the versatility of the 35mm focal length and this makes keeping it in my bag for short or long hikes under the stars a no brainer.”– Jack Fusco

Will there be a Z-mount version?
No word on additional mounts at the moment.
A good 35mm lens is essential to any photographer’s kit. I have two of the Sigma 35mm Art lenses for my Canon 5DIV’s. They work much better than the Canon 35mm L lens, just my opinion.
