Join us first for a webinar where you can learn all there is to prepare you for the world of dance photography, followed by two different in-depth portrait workshops: one for dancers, and one for kids!

Finding the Perfect Lens for Dance with Heather Larkin

Creating portraits of dancers is a unique experience, but choosing the right lens and the right environment can turn your images into masterpieces! Come learn from SIGMA Ambassador Heather Larkin as she discusses the importance of environment and lens selection when photographing dancers! Heather’s extensive experience photographing ballet dancers in a variety of environments gives her a unique perspective (pun intended) on the topic.

The big question: What do you want to show in your images? Are you in an urban location where you want to include the buildings? Are you in a garden where you want to blur as much as possible? What lens will show off a dancer’s athleticism as much as possible?

See how lens choice (and aperture settings) can change the depth of field and tell different stories. Learn how to take advantage of any location when creating dance portraits by selecting the right lens. Finally, think critically on what makes a good dance photo in order to correct mistakes in the field! This class is also an excellent lead-in to our Dance Deep Dive Masterclass with SIGMA and Heather Larkin.

Deep Dive Dance Photography Masterclass

Don’t know where to begin to photograph dancers? Jump right in for this day-long studio and location in-depth learning experience with SIGMA lenses and Heather Larkin. In this deep dive masterclass, you’ll learn what to look for in a good dance photo, and a few dance vocabulary terms so you can ask your ballet models to do what you’re envisioning. Then you’ll have the opportunity to test SIGMA loaner gear while you watch Heather as she poses the dancer for the best portraits in-studio in the Hunt’s Photo Melrose classroom, then you’ll take photos as well! After a short break, you’ll come back and shoot some super fun gel images with flying scarves and colored lighting while still putting the morning learning into practice, all with expert help along the way to ensure you get killer images when you’re done. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for photographers of any skill level!

Prep and Follow Up, Too!

Included in this class will be an introductory webinar, Photography and Poise- Finding the Perfect Lens for Dance, and an image review/follow-up session where we’ll be able to review your images. This is an excellent opportunity to improve upon your dance photography from a professional dance photographer!

Schedule of the day

• 10:00AM: Introductions at Hunt’s Photo Melrose, Intro to Dance Poses, Gear Loan Option
• 11:00AM – 1:00PM: Photographing first set of dancers
• 1:00 – 2:00PM: Lunch Break
• 2:00 – 4:00PM: Photograph second set of dancers (in the field at a nearby location, weather pending)
• 4:00PM: Wrap A SIGMA Tech Rep and a Hunt’s Photo Educator will also be available to answer questions throughout the day!

Photographing Kids featuring Fairyography!

Interacting with kids is tough, especially as an adult. Learn how silly games and a thigh workout will help get you the best photographs of kids, ever! Heather’s Fairyography Photo Sessions are all about playing dress up, having fun, and feeling special! In these sessions, girls between 5 and 12 years old play dress-up with our exquisite, curated selection of fairy dresses & wings. These sessions allow them to lean into their magic and feel truly beautiful for an afternoon (and beyond!)

Over the morning/early afternoon, SIGMA Ambassador Heather Larkin will share how to run a kid’s fairytale photo session, featured at the Stevens Coolidge Place in North Andover! While these photos will all be in the style of fairies, the techniques Heather will demonstrate can relate to any kids! Heather was a pre-k teacher before her 18 years in business as a children’s photographer and she can tell you all about:

• Which lenses to pick for the most magical fairy portraits.
• Silly games to play for real laughs and authentic expressions.
• Reverse psychology will win you points too
• Treating kids like real people, no baby talk here!
• Not resorting to bribes!
