Nicolas Buffe

A French artist based in Tokyo since 2007, Nicolas Buffe is the creator of a multifaceted and multidisciplinary universe that blends erudition and popular culture. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, he received his doctorate from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014 and was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 2018. He belongs to a generation naturally influenced by Japanese pop culture since childhood. References to medieval, renaissance and baroque works were added and mixed throughout his studies. Nicolas Buffe has exhibited in several contemporary art venues in Europe and Asia, such as the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo (solo exhibition in 2014), and designed monumental installations in venues such as GINZA SIX - Tokyo. In addition to the fine arts, his other activities include collaborations with fashion and luxury brands (Hermès, Comme des Garçons, Pierre Hermé, Aramasa), architecture ("Museum Garage" in Miami Design District), manufactures (Sèvres, Limoges, Aubusson) and art direction for operas (Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris).
