It began with a simple idea – create an extraordinary portrait of a child currently in foster care waiting for adoption. Since the Heart Gallery of Pinellas & Pasco was created in 2006, we have helped find over 300 adoptive families for our waiting children in foster care. With the goal of finding adoptive “forever” families, the Heart Gallery is a collaborative project using inspiring portraits of children taken by passionate volunteer photographers. These beautiful portraits are displayed in digital and print exhibits around the Tampa Bay region in addition to our online gallery and social media platforms.
One of featured photographers, Alicia Fernandez, became a photographer after becoming a parent and finding herself torn between her family life and her career. While working as a contractor with Disney’s Fine Art Photography Department, she became skilled in photographing children and families in addition to event photography. Using her passion for storytelling and her fun loving personality, Alicia became a volunteer Heart Gallery photographer helping to find families for our waiting children.
Alicia and the Heart Gallery, who are both sponsored Sigma Corporation, had the recent opportunity to photograph Sherylriana, otherwise known as Shay. This 17-year-old child recently became available for adoption and is looking for her forever family. Shay is upbeat and friendly, loves hot pink and theater classes, and aims to be a nurse someday. Shay hasn’t given up hope that her forever family is out there waiting for her, ready with an open mind and the understanding that family does not stop when childhood ends.
