Brian Coffey's Super Moon 2012

Sigma’s Fan Photo of the Week (May 14-18) was made by photographer Brian Coffey with his 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS lens and Nikon D2x. Here is what he tell us:

This image was captured in May 2012 in Rome, Georgia. It was shot in the West Rome area where I live.I walk a certain route every day. On That particular day we were expecting a “super moon”. I knew that the perfect shot would be at the top of a particular hill along my route. I checked out the stop and sure enough there comes the moon about to rise just above the trees. With the addition of all the clouds in the sky the light from the moon gave the whole sky a nice glow. I thought I have just got to capture this. You don’t get a super moon everyday so I was hoping to make the most of it that night. Knowing I had only a few minutes to capture the shot I ran home and grabbed up my camera and tripod and headed back up the hill to the spot. I set the tripod up, mounted the lens to my camera, placed the camera on the tripod, plugged in my wireless shutter remote and looked up and there it was. At this point it was just rising above the trees illuminating the clouds and giving off a wonderful glow. I knew I wanted to capture as much of the tonal range as I could but with such a small window to capture my shot what do Ido. Using the wonderful feature on my Nikon D2X of multiple exposure bracketing I was able to capture all the exposures I needed for that perfect shot. The lens I used that night was the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM OS lens. I had a feeling I had captured it but didn’t know for certain till I went home and blended them together. As I looked at it on my computer screen I thought WOW! This shot turned out great. I thought this would be a great shot to add to my portfolio. Can’t wait till the next “super moon” opportunity.

As a professional photographer I’m always out looking for that wonderful next image. Always looking for that next creative, unique and one-of-a-kind photo. I have always had a love and passion for photography. No matter how many photos I capture I’m always pushing myself to create something different. Always pushing to improve, learn and expand my work in photography.

The best advice I can give is to always strive to improve, learn and to be creative. No matter what kindof camera you have whether it is a point-and-shoot, a basic or high-end DSLR. No matter if you have basic kit lenses to the expensive pro lenses just always keep shooting and have fun! Even though I have multiple DSLRs including my Nikon D2X and my large range of other equipment my favorite device to shoot with at times is my iPhone4. It makes and pushes me to focus only on what is in front of me, not on all the detailed controls. It is just you and the camera, it gives me a great feeling to capture the shot in camera and not always want to run to Photoshop to enhance.

Hope everyone enjoyed looking at the photo and reading the article. Thanks for checking it out!
